Free Download: Lutherans engage

There will always be a desire to have more workers in the church: more pastors to fill vacancies, more rostered teachers to serve in Lutheran schools, more missionaries to send around the globe. At the same time, we trust that the Lord provides.

The Summer 2026 issue of Lutherans Engage the World highlights a few of the ways that the Lord does just that, as He calls people into His service from secular careers, during times of transition and through formative experiences like time spent at a Lutheran camp. Sometimes, He also sends partners from other countries to join us in His mission. Thanks be to God that He uses all things — even imperfect people like us — to encourage His children and accomplish His purposes.

Four Hours
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
– Acts 2:42

Recently I was reading the August edition of the LCMS newspaper, The Reporter. One article discussed a congregation in Kenya, stating? On an ordinary Sunday morning in the Samburu County of Kenya, 10 women rise before the sun to make the four-hour walk to attend church in Wamba.

Did you catch that? Before dawn, ten women rise and walk four hours to church. We don’t do this in the US, do we? We will refuse to drive even forty minutes to get to a church because we deem it “too far away." Yet these women rise early and walk four hours, one way, to church.

With the help of Googlemaps, I wanted to put these “four hours” into perspective for us. So, if you live in Bridgeville and decide to walk to Canonsburg, it will take four hours. But, if your church was located in Baltimore, MD you could still drive there in four hours. In fact, if your church was located in Erie, PA you could drive up there in only two hours! Would you drive to a church in Baltimore if that was your only option? The women in Kenya walk four hours, would you drive four hours? Are you willing to drive up to Erie if that was the closest LCMS congregation around? It’s only a two hour drive, the women in Kenya walk four hours.

Most of us would not even drive an hour to church, much less walk, but we could. It all comes down to a matter of priorities and WHY we would be willing to go to such great lengths to worship with other Christians. The women in Kenya had a very specific reason why they went to church. The article continued, “10 women . . . make the four-hour walk to attend church in Wamba. There, with the rest of the congregation, they receive the gifts of faith and forgiveness that God promises to give in the Divine Service.”

Why do those women walk four hours every Sunday? They walk because they yearn to receive Christ’s forgiveness, they hunger to receive Christ’s body and blood in the Lord’s Supper, they long to hear Him say to them, “I forgive you all your sins.” But those women are not alone. You are the same as them, and you can also desire to be near Christ in worship and Bible study with your fellow saints. I think the question always comes down to this: is Christ and the church a priority in your life? Christ has certainly made you a priority in His life and because of that, He longs to come to you in Word and sacrament every single Sunday.

Old Testament Reading – Jeremiah 15:15–21 
O LORD, you know;
remember me and visit me,
and take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance take me not away;
know that for your sake I bear reproach.
Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
O LORD, God of hosts.
I did not sit in the company of revelers,
nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,
for you had filled me with indignation.
Why is my pain unceasing,
my wound incurable,
refusing to be healed?
Will you be to me like a deceitful brook,
like waters that fail?
Therefore thus says the LORD:
“If you return, I will restore you,
and you shall stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
but you shall not turn to them.
And I will make you to this people
a fortified wall of bronze;

but they shall not prevail over you,

Epistle Reading – Romans 12:9–21 
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” 

Woman’s Ministry: Bible Study

Format of Study
This study will require reading on your own 5 days a week. We will come together on Saturdays to watch an accompanying video and have discussion. We will start week one already having read the first week. LWML will supply the first 15 participants with the book for free.

A new school year is beginning, and it’s the perfect time for children, and adults, to Rally Back to a Sunday routine centered on the study of God’s Word.

• Coffee, juice, warm cinnamon rolls, bagels and more!

• Each child will receive a Rally Day goodie bag

• After the opening, students will meet their teachers and be dismissed to their Sunday School classroom; adults/teens will stay in the Fellowship Hall for Bible Study
