Old Testament Reading -- Jeremiah 20:7–13
O Lord, you have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
you are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, “Violence and destruction!”
For the word of the Lord has become for me
a reproach and derision all day long.
If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
For I hear many whispering.
Terror is on every side! “
Denounce him! Let us denounce him!”
say all my close friends,
watching for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then we can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
they will not overcome me.
They will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
Sing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.

Epistle Reading -- Romans 6:12–23
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, . . .

“Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.”

LWML June Challenge

Assisting Women and Unborn Children with Physical and Spiritual Care
2025–2027 MISSION GRANT NO. 7
LIGHT OF JESUS CHRIST TO UNWED HOMELESS MOTHERS
A PLACE OF REFUGE MINISTRIES OF SOUTH WI, INC.,
WISCONSIN | $75,000

A Place of Refuge (APOR) is a sanctity of life ministry that positively impacts the lives of unwed, homeless, pregnant women and their preborn children. The mission is to stand firm on the Scriptures, sharing that both mom and baby are equally worthy of Jesus’ love. APOR has served more than 800 women over the past 30 years.

There are three components to A Place of Refuge which include the Advocacy Ministry, Blessed Again Resale Shop, and the Refuge House. The Advocacy Program serves women who have physical needs for the babies growing in their wombs but not in need of housing. These women receive a layette for two years which includes diapers, clothing, and baby items as well as a Bible and Mustard Seed prayers. The Blessed Again Resale Shop is run by three employees and many volunteers. Donations from area churches and the community are sold to support A Place of Refuge Ministries. Women can reside at the Refuge House for their entire pregnancy and up to a year following the birth.

At the Refuge House, the women are taught life skills by an experienced, licensed LCMS life coach. The parenting resources from the coach and the staff assist the moms in learning and implementing new skills. The women attend worship at a local LCMS congregation every Sunday. The current staff is teaching the Catechism to the moms and the Holy Spirit has brought many moms and babies to the baptismal font.

This grant will be used to purchase a new van for the Refuge House as well as educational resources. The van will assist the women with transportation to church, Bible studies, doctors’ appointments, job interviews, and grocery shopping. A set of five parental skill books will be gifted to each woman in the Advocacy Program and the new moms at the Refuge House.

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

LCMS singles: Finding the Lutheran needle in the haystack

LCMS Singles…
“It’s becoming obvious to all of us in the older generation — parents and grandparents — that it is increasingly difficult for young people to meet and connect,” said the Rev. Bryan Wolfmueller, pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Jesus Lutheran Church of the Deaf in Austin, TX. Wolfmueller has done significant work sharing Lutheran theology online. Singles in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) looking to find their spouse within the church are often stymied because there are “just very few Lutheran singles that are concentrated in one spot,” he explained.

Many LCMS singles agree with his assessment. Matt Nitsch, 28, a technical support specialist in Sheboygan, Wis., concurred: “If you ask a lot of [young LCMS] people, [they will say] they’re the only person their age from their church.” In Nitsch’s congregation, he says, there are “maybe five people within my age range, and two of them are married to each other.”

LCMS singles

Esther and the Rev. Eli Voigt met through LCMS Connections, an online Lutheran matchmaking site. They married in Sept. 2025.

By Mary Henrichs, May 11, 2026

With local LCMS dating pools seeming so small, many singles will try dating outside of the church, but without unity in faith, forming a lasting relationship can be difficult: “Certain things … you can debate with your significant other — you may like pasta, but then she doesn’t,” said Matt. “But when it comes to, say, abortion — you want to be aligned.” Marica Turan, a 36-year-old who works in the corporate world near Akron, Ohio, hopes her future husband will share her faith: “[With] Christ in the middle, … everything else falls into place around that.”

‘A great place to start’
Seeing the need to help LCMS singles connect with one another, Wolfmueller and his wife, Keri, stepped in with an unconventional idea: a Lutheran singles cruise. In total, 138 singles ages 21 to 41, each endorsed by their pastor, set sail in August 2024, hoping to find love or, at the very least, enjoy a “vacation with fellow Lutherans,” as Gideon Baldwin put it. As a “baseline,” agreed fellow cruise attendee Terrin Boozikee, “you’re surrounded by people who have common values, which is a great place to start.” She and Gideon, both 29 at the time of the cruise, hit it off during a round of minigolf — which she won — after he helped her by moving a rock that had been blocking her shot’s path.
