Joel 1:15-20
Alas for the day!
For the day of the LORD is near,
and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.
Is not the food cut off
before our eyes,
joy and gladness
from the house of our God?
The seed shrivels under the clods;
the storehouses are desolate;
the granaries are torn down
because the grain has dried up.
How the beasts groan!
The herds of cattle are perplexed
because there is no pasture for them;
even the flocks of sheep suffer.
To you, O LORD, I call.
For fire has devoured
the pastures of the wilderness,
and flame has burned
all the trees of the field.
Even the beasts of the field pant for you
because the water brooks are dried up,
and fire has devoured
the pastures of the wilderness.

Romans 10:1-21
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for
“Their voice has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.”
But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,
“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,
“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”
But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

The Lord’s Prayer - The Conclusion
What is the Conclusion?
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
What does this mean?
This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen means “yes, yes, it shall be so.

Love Thy Neighbor: Outreach & Evangelism

Love Thy Neighbor: Outreach & Evangelism

By: Mike Wallace, Congregational Vice President

Outreach refers to the activities, events, and human care ministries that we do as a congregation to engage the non-churched people in our community by meeting their needs in some way. Outreach focuses on actions that demonstrate God’s love for those around us who don’t have a church home. Examples include food banks, festivals, seminars, preschool programs, church suppers, etc.

Outreach provides opportunities for a congregation’s members to meet, and continue contact , with non-churched people in the community. Through these repeated “touch points” that emphasize caring and support, relationships are built between individuals in the two groups of people.

Once relationships are established through outreach, evangelism can happen. Evangelism is nothing more than sharing the Good News of the Gospel. When individual Christians share their faith in Jesus and His forgiveness with others, it is called Witnessing. Of course, evangelism also happens through a church’s Word and Sacrament ministries, i.e., worship services and Bible studies. God can, and will, work through the witness of congregational members, and the evangelism work of Pastors, to lead unbelievers to faith and connect them to His Church.

Remember: Outreach and Evangelism/Witnessing share the same goal . . . However, outreach is primarily an action; Evangelism is primarily a message .

St. Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 provides insights into effective outreach and evangelism/witnessing:

5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

This passage reminds us that we can actively and intentionally “plant and water the seeds”, but God does the work of making them grow into faith! We must understand that church growth (i.e., the numbers) is the Holy Spirit’s concern.

Pray
Help me Lord to be a good steward and servant of your gifts and for others to see Your Love for them in all that I do. In Jesus name, AMEN
