Zion Women’s Book Club Summer Meeting & Salad Potluck

Zion Women’s Book Club
Summer Meeting & Salad Potluck

Make This Place Your Home
by Mary Rubarb (Link to Amazon/Kindle website)

Thursday, July 10th from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. (after VBS) in Zion’s Outdoor Pavilion

Bring a favorite lunch salad to share!

This is also a Meet the Author event – Mary Rubarb will be with us that day to talk about her book!

About the book: Libby knew that the life she'd always known wasn't normal, but it was hers. When that life is suddenly gone, all that Libby has to cling to are the memories of what she once had. When Libby is sent off to live with an aunt she never knew, she is faced with an entirely new life. Suddenly, she has friends. Here, she is thought of as smart and talented. But how could she be happy in her new life when in her old life, she'd let everyone down? Is it only a matter of time before these people realize that this life isn't where she belongs?

LCMS Stewardship Ministry Thoughts

LCMS Stewardship Ministry Thoughts

1 Peter 2:11 – “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” Passions of the flesh — that means the things our flesh desires. One way to sum up all the “passions of the flesh” is to call them greed: the desire to have more things to bring us comfort and peace of mind. But that shows us the real problem with greed. It wages war against our soul, and it urges us to place our trust in the things of this world and not in God. But St. Peter reminds us that we are sojourners and exiles. We belong to the kingdom of God. We have been purchased by the blood of Christ and belong to Him. That knowledge frees us from greed, and it frees us for generosity.

James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” The thought James captures here is repeated over and over again in the Bible. Everything good we have is from God. He loves to give. He loves to bless. He loves to show us generosity time and again. And He desires that we grow into His image and reflect His love. That is why God wants us to give to the ministry of His church. God can do anything He wants to without our help. But He commands us to give so that we will grow in our imitation of His own generosity.

LCMS Stewardship Ministry Thoughts

1 Peter 2:11 – “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” Passions of the flesh — that means the things our flesh desires. That is why God wants us to give to the ministry of His church. God can do anything He wants to without our help. But He commands us to give so that we will grow in our imitation of His own generosity.

James 1:22 – “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Martin Luther said this about our faith: “Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, this faith. And so it is impossible for it not to do good works incessantly.” The Word of God is not merely to be heard, but to be received and believed, and implemented. James reminds us of this, and he encourages us to examine our lives and come to repentance, where we can see that we are not living out our faith in sincerity.

Acts 16:9 – “And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’” God does all the saving of the Macedonians, but He does it through the ministry of St. Paul who was called to go and help them out. How is the Lord calling you to use your gifts for His work?

Numbers 23:4-28
and God met Balaam. And Balaam said to him, “I have arranged the seven altars and I have offered on each altar a bull and a ram.” And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” And he returned to him, and behold, he and all the princes of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering. And Balaam took up his discourse and said,

“From Aram Balak has brought me,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
and come, denounce Israel!’
How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?
For from the top of the crags I see him,
from the hills I behold him;
behold, a people dwelling alone,
and not counting itself among the nations!
Who can count the dust of Jacob
or number the fourth part of Israel?
Let me die the death of the upright,
and let my end be like his!”

And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.” And he answered and said, “Must I not take care to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?”

And Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, from which you may see them. You shall see only a fraction of them and shall not see them all. Then curse them for me from there.” And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the LORD over there.” And the LORD met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.” And he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the LORD spoken?” And Balaam took up his discourse and said,

“Rise, Balak, and hear;
give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Behold, I received a command to bless:
he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob,
nor has he seen trouble in Israel.
The LORD their God is with them,
and the shout of a king is among them.
God brings them out of Egypt
and is for them like the horns of the wild ox.
For there is no enchantment against Jacob,
no divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,
‘What has God wrought!’
Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up
and as a lion it lifts itself;
it does not lie down until it has devoured the prey
and drunk the blood of the slain.”

And Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all, and do not bless them at all.” But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘All that the LORD says, that I must do’?” And Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.” So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the desert.

Luke 22:47-71
While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

The Sacrament of the Altar
What is the Sacrament of the Altar?
It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.
Where is this written?
The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul write: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Zion’s Charles (Chuck) Wallace Vicarage Assignment

VICARAGE!
On April 30th, in the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus, I received my vicarage placement - a major milestone on the path to pastoral ministry. I'm thrilled to share that for the next year, I'll be serving as a vicar at Chapel of the Cross - Lutheran in St. Louis, MO. I can't wait to begin this next chapter of learning, serving, and growing in the church.

As I always say, this incredible opportunity to serve on vicarage would not be possible without your generous support and encouragement throughout my seminary education. I am truly grateful for the ways you continue to walk alongside me on this journey.

How You Can Pray
• For fruitful ministry at Chapel of the Cross
• For continued growth in preaching and teaching
• For the people I'll serve and learn from this year

Katrina and Me
Katrina will continue to serve in her called position at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO as their Director of Worship Arts.

ONTO THE NEXT 2 YEARS!
Coming to seminary, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I definitely knew I'd be in classes and learning a lot from great scholars and theologians-but beyond that, I came in with an open mind. What I've come to learn is that seminary is so much more than just the classroom. I've found an amazing community of brothers where we're able to bond, grow, and support each other as future pastors. I've also found a great church to serve at for fieldwork, and it's taught me so much about ministry and what it means to be a faithful, caring pastor. Thank you for all of your support over the past two years-it has meant more than you know. As I look ahead to the next two years of seminary, I do so with deep gratitude. This journey has been trans formative and I pray that you will continue to support me through your prayers, encouragement, and generosity.

"AND I AM SURE OF THIS THAT HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN YOU WILL BRING IT TO COMPLETION AT THE DAY OF JESUS CHRIST.”
Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

AS ALWAYS, STAY IN TOUCH!
Below, you'll find my personal address, phone number, and email. Please don't hesitate to reach out-whether by letter, email, or text. I would love the opportunity to connect with you, get to know your church, and personally express my gratitude for your support.
