Pray for Life

On November 12, a group from Zion Lutheran Church will pray and offer assistance outside the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Pittsburgh. As God's people we will ask for Him to act on behalf of the unborn and shine His light into the darkness. We will meet at Zion at 9:00 a.m. to pray, eat, and prepare ourselves. At 10:00 a.m. we will carpool downtown to pray and offer help to those who need it. If this is your first  time doing something like this, a group will go back to Zion after about an hour. A group will also stay until 1:00 p.m. and return to the church for lunch and a debrief. If you can't make it to the church for the preparation time, there will be a video you can watch online and then you can meet us downtown at 10:00 a.m. This is an important opportunity to act on our convictions and spread the Gospel in a difficult situation. Contact Vicar Joshua for more information.

Dress the Vicar .... in Steeler's Gear!

Many of you know that our Vicar is an avid Cleveland Browns fan. Many of you also know that the Steeler's play the Browns on November 20. Hopefully you also know that Zion is raising money to purchase bells to form a bell choir. What do these things have in common, you ask?

Well, on November 20th we will meet in the church basement to have pizza and watch the game. Joshua was planning to wear his number 16 browns jersey, but he is willing to give Zion control over his wardrobe... for a price. Starting this Sunday there will be a box in the narthex to place your cash or check in. For example ,if Zion raises 25 dollars for the bell choir he will wear black and gold socks. For 100 he will have a terrible towel around his neck. 250 dollars earns a Steeler's hat. 1000 dollars and he wears all of the above plus a jersey. If we pay for the whole bell choir, he will wear a Steelers jersey to men's Bible breakfast every Saturday for the rest of his time at Zion. A photo will be posted on the church website if you are unable to make the game. Look for the progress chart in the Narthex to keep track of our clothing item goals.

ROAD TRIP TO MEET THE NEW VICAR! -- April 26, 2016

ROAD TRIP TO MEET THE NEW VICAR! -- April 26, 2016
A team of seven Zion members departed in the early morning to brave the rain en route to St. Louis, Missouri in time to attend the 3 PM Vicarage Assignment Ceremony at the Concordia Seminary Chapel. Representing all God’s people at Zion, the entourage included Pastor McLellan, Bill Bishop, John and Katie Gielarowski, Mike and Linda Kroeger, and Kenny Wuerthele.

The group eagerly awaited the announcement and then at the close of the ceremony made their way to the narthex where they surprised our Vicar-to-be, JOSHUA ULM. Humbled by the great effort made to greet him and his family, Joshua expressed his gratitude and eagerness to start his vicarage at Zion!  Joshua and his wife Mary, a music education major, have a 20-month-old daughter Hannah and a son named Joseph due in mid-June. With family in both the Detroit area (hers) and Akron area (his), living in Pittsburgh will be a family-friendly assignment!

Following a Pastor-guided tour of the campus, the group happily hosted Joshua, Mary and Hannah at The Cheshire Inn for dinner.  A box of Sarris Chocolates and a gift certificate to Burgh’s Pizza & Wing Pub were presented as a welcome and early preview of Pittsburgh. Wonderful conversation ensued confirming that all three will be delightful additions to the Zion family!

Please pray for the safe arrival of baby Joseph, the successful completion of this semester’s coursework for Joshua, and the family’s smooth transition and relocation from St. Louis to Bridgeville.

Vicar arrival date TBA!

Zion Reads the Bible in a Year

May I suggest you resolve to read the Bible in a year? ... Even if you get a late start. As a congregation, we did this once before, back in 2012, but it’s been four years and it’s time to do it again! Like we did last time, we will have the readings (and audio recordings of the readings) available on-line. The reading list will be available on-line, in the weekly worship bulletin and in the monthly newsletter. The sermons for the year will be based on the readings from the previous week. We are going all-in on reading the Bible in a Year for 2016!

Many of you read the Bible in a Year back in 2012, and it changed your life. It gave you a greater understanding of the Gospel, gave you a better picture of what exactly is in Scripture (and what is not), and strengthened your faith in Christ. If you read the Bible in a Year back in 2012, please consider encouraging someone else to read the Bible with you in 2016. It changed your life; it will change theirs too.

15 minutes a day. 1 year. The Bible. Let’s do this, church!
