VBS Letter to Families

Dear Big Jungle Adventure Families,

Every year we choose a mission project to be a part of our VBS program.  It was particularly difficult to choose a mission project because there are so many people in need - in so many parts of the world including our own United States of America.   God calls us to care for our neighbors, and that includes our neighbors in faraway places like Africa.   So, this year we have chosen the Lutheran Malaria Initiative.

Malaria is a disease carried by mosquitoes.   Here, in the United States, if a mosquito bites you it’s no big deal.  But in countries that have malaria, a mosquito bite can make kids VERY sick!  And it’s no fun to be sick.

The good news is that it’s easy to keep kids from getting sick with malaria.  Sleeping under an insecticide-treated bed net at night keeps the mosquitoes away.  Making sure people know the symptoms of malaria means they will go to the doctor when they start feeling sick.  And making sure that doctors and nurses have the right medicines to treat malaria means that if kids do get sick, they can get medicine to make them well.

The Lutheran Malaria Initiative is doing all these things and more!

OUR GOAL = 30 TREATED BED NETS

Every $10 will purchase a treated bed net.  So, our goal is to raise enough money to donate at least 30 of these nets.   As you come into the church sanctuary, there is a large water jug with a poster on it that says “Lutheran Malaria Initiative”.  Each day, we will be asking the children to bring in a different monetary denomination to place into the water jug.  For example, on Monday, we will be bringing in pennies to add to the jug.  (Of course, we will accept any denomination each day!)

The schedule for the week is:
Monday - pennies
Tuesday – nickels
Wednesday – dimes
Thursday – quarters
Friday – dollar bills in any denomination

This is a wonderful way for our children to get involved in a mission project and to show them the importance of reaching out to our brothers and sisters in Christ by giving gifts to others.

Thank you for your donations!!

Joyfully in Christ,
Katie Gielarowski
