Pastor's Message (from the bulletin)
On our way back from the hospital with our newborn son, Thomas Walter, a white Chevy Silverado pulled in behind us, coming off the Interstate onto Washington Pike. Ahead of us, a car had stopped to turn left. We stopped. The truck behind us stopped. Then we heard the sound of tires skidding on the pavement followed by the tell-tale WHACK. Looking into the rearview mirror, I could see that the Silverado had been rear-ended. Alissa and I looked at each other, thinking the same thing. Had God protected our newborn son on our ride home from the hospital?
When it comes to God's intervening work in creation, we are sometimes left wondering: is what I just heard, seen, or otherwise experienced the hidden hand of God? Sometimes, however, we do not need to guess.
After separating the waters of the Red Sea to allow thousands upon thousands of Israelites to pass through as on dry ground, God washes away the Egyptian army. Moses saw God at work in this; there was no doubt in his mind. And so, in response to God's act of deliverance, he offers up the song of praise we will focus on this morning. We may look at this awesome act of salvation and judgment and think to ourselves: "boy, I wish God would act in such an obvious way in my life ... I'd have such a stronger faith!"
The good news is that God DOES act in such an obvious way in our lives. Frequently. Today, he will come to you in his word to forgive your sins and strengthen your faith; he will be present in the Lord's Supper and he will be with you when you leave this building and take up your cross and engage the, world as his ambassador. Just as God rescued the Israelites from their enemies in the crossing of the Red Sea, he rescues us today from our real enemies: sin, death and the devil!
