Preschool News for April - August 2017

It’s about that time……time to wrap up the school year. Every year I say that I can’t believe the year is over, but it’s true, it flies by so quickly, but what an awesome year we had!

We took field trips to Bednar’s green house, the Trolley Museum, the Children’s Museum, Simmons Farm, Springhouse Farm, PNC Park, Giant Eagle and Chick-fil-A, just to name a few. We had parties and parades, Chapel and Kids Praise; visits from Fire Fighter Phil, the Queen of Hearts, the Chick-fil-A cow, Happy the penguin and Martin Luther…did you see him in the hallway? We had donuts with dads and muffins with moms and serenaded our families with beautiful Christmas songs! Oh….and did I mention that we learned our ABC’s, 123’s, the days of the week, the months of the year, practiced our handwriting (without tears), learned our addresses, phone numbers, letter sounds, sight words, beginning math skills, how to write our names, how not to eat glue (haha), manners, how to forgive and a whole lot about Jesus! Yes…what a great year indeed!

Please continue to keep our school in your prayers. It is a huge mission for our church and we are so blessed to have the opportunity to reach so many children and their families. This year we were able to teach 150 little souls all about Jesus and the sacrifice He made for us. Our enrollment is currently over 130 and we still have the summer for families to register…what a blessing!

Have a great summer and we see you in September.
Blessings,

Preschool News for March 2017

Greetings from the Preschool!
March is going to be a very busy and exciting month here at Zion. Aside from the usual activity in the classrooms, we will be celebrating Lutheran Schools Week this month. We will start the month out with our second Spirit Night at Chick-fil A. As you know, Chick-fil-A is a Christian organization that donates 15% of total sales that night back to our school….and we love their chicken! Please join us on Monday March 6th from 4:30 – 7:00 at the South Hills location on Rt. 19. You can’t miss us….we’ll be the ones wearing the very fashionable Zion Lutheran Preschool T-shirts.

The rest of the week will be filled with visits from a Storyteller for the Small Steps and Preschool classes. She will come to school completely dressed in character (The Queen of Hearts) and remains in character the entire time. “Do you LOVE to read” is the name of the interactive program and includes singing, role playing, puppets and lots of storytelling with the children. The PreK and Stepping Stones classes will receive a visit from the Aviary. The Children will discover how penguins swim, slide, waddle and eat, with the help of an African penguin…yes, a penguin will be visiting our school….how cool is that?

We will also be hosting our annual Dads, Dudes and Donuts over Lutheran Schools Week. It’s a wonderful time when Dads, Granddads, uncles, or any special male comes for a morning filled with donuts, coffee, sports activities and fellowship time with their child…it’s an awesome day. The week’s grand finale is our Ice Cream Social and Art Show. The children have been working very hard on their masterpieces and can’t wait to reveal them at the big show. The night is topped off with ice cream sundaes, a bake sale and a themed raffle basket extravaganza!

Oh…did I mention that we will have a life-sized cardboard Martin Luther in the school lobby for this special week? Thank you, Vicar Joshua! Martin Luther just may be dressed in theme related apparel during the week, in addition to sharing some of his famous quotes. Please come and check it out.

Chapel donations this month will help support the Feed My Starving Children mission. Feed My Starving Chil-dren is a Christian, non-profit organization that partners with schools, orphanages, medical clinics, and non-government agencies in 70 countries around the world where children are at risk of dying from starvation. This fall, 500+ volunteers will gather for two hours of fun to pack life sustaining meals for 108,000 malnourished children across the globe. Each meal (which consists of rice, soy, dried vegetables, and a vitamin blend) costs .22 cents. During chapel we were talking about how Jesus’ love can’t be contained by using a simple experiment using baking soda and vinegar. When vinegar is added to baking soda a volcano-like bubble explosion occurs…much to the delight of the children. The bubbles (Jesus’ love) can’t be contained in a bag, not in a jar, and not in a box…his love comes a bubblin’ through. To help explain how we can show Jesus’ love to others, we gave each child a tube of M&Ms to take home and enjoy. When the M&M’s are all gone, they are to fill each M&M tube with quarters which amounts to $14, which will cover 63 meals, and will go towards the goal of 108,000 meals! AMEN!

Preschool News for February 2017

Greetings from the Preschool! It’s hard to believe but registration for the 2017/2018 school is under way. Please continue to keep our school in your prayers as we prepare to welcome new students and families to Zion.  We continue to experience the blessings growth at Zion.  We are adding an afternoon Stepping Stones class for next year, in addition to our afternoon Preschool and PreKindergartn class.  What a tremendous opportunity we have to preach the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to small children. “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Luke 18:16-17

Current school families can register now with open registration starting February 6th.  Registration information can be found in the school lobby at the workstation, or it can be found on our website.  If you know anyone interested in our school, please have them call the office and ask for me.  I’m scheduling tours now.

Each February our school focuses on Jesus’ love for us.  As a way for us to show love to others, our school has again teamed up with the Sunday School participating in a mission project that troops overseas through the non-profit organization Operation: Bags of Love.   We are collecting items that are desperately needed, and appreciated, by our troops and their families.  We have been collecting cereal bars, beef jerky and chewing gum.  Hopefully between the school and the church we will have plenty of items or “Bags of Love” to send to our troops.

The teachers are also busy conducting PreKindergarten evaluations.  Before children enter Kindergarten we test them on specific skills that are needed for Kindergarten.  We then hold conferences with their parents and review the test results. It is our goal to give the parents as much information as possible before having to make the decision to send to Kindergarten, or to put them into a class like our Stepping Stones class.

As always, we welcome you to come down to the school and see what is going on.  There’s always something new and exciting.  We would love to see you!

Blessings,
Tracey Harris

Preschool News for January 2017

Believe it, or not, December has come and gone and what a whirlwind of a month it was! We had two Christmas programs, two Christmas shopping days, Chapel and countless classroom Christmas parties. And did I mention….ugly sweater week? I’ve never see so many “beautiful” sweaters in one place…ones that jingled, sparkled and yes, even twinkled, and that was just the staff!

Our Christmas programs were a huge success again this year. We started the program with a Christmas video detailing the events in Luke 2. We waited to process the children down the aisle until after the video. With over 400 people over the course of two nights, and for some the only time they would spend in church during the Christmas season, we wanted to make an impact ….and boy did we ever. The children entered the church and the joyous singing commenced. It was awesome!!

We’ll start the new year getting the children back into a routine which can sometimes be difficult after a long break. We will look forward to visits from the zoo, continuing the Christmas story and lots of winter time fun.

Registration for the 2017/2018 school year (yikes) will start at the end of January. We will be adding an afternoon Stepping Stones class on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday, in addition to our afternoon PreKindergarten and Preschool. That is the last class that we can add to our school…we will be officially “out of space” in both the morning and afternoon….GOD IS GOOD! Please continue to pray that God will continue to guide families to our school and that we can continue our level of excellence both academically and spiritually.

Happy New Year!
Blessings,
Tracey
